The Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) is the national Scouting and Guiding association of India. Established in 1950 after the merger of multiple Scout and Guide organizations, it promotes character building, citizenship training, and self-reliance among young people.
Scouting was founded by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, after the successful Brownsea Island camp in England. His vision was to prepare young people through outdoor activities, adventure, and community service. Today, Scouting is a worldwide movement continuing his legacy of learning by doing.
The Scouting program is progressive. Scouts advance through ranks as they learn skills, participate in service, and show commitment to the movement.
Scouting is not just about outdoor adventure. It prepares young people to handle challenges in life, instills confidence, and shapes them into compassionate leaders.
Develops leadership qualities, communication skills, and responsibility through real experiences.
Teaches punctuality, honesty, and the importance of discipline in personal and professional life.
Encourages helping others, disaster relief volunteering, and contributing to society’s welfare.
Uniform symbolizes unity and discipline among Scouts and Guides. It includes a navy blue shirt, scarf, belt, badges, and caps. The uniform is not just clothing—it reflects equality, teamwork, and identity. Scouts wear their uniform with pride during camps, parades, and national events, reminding them of their duty to serve society.
Knots are an essential part of Scouting, teaching patience, focus, and problem-solving. They are used in camping, rescue work, pioneering projects, and even daily life. Mastery of knots builds confidence and practical outdoor skills.
Used to tie two ropes together securely. Useful in bandages and packages.
Joins ropes of different thickness. Strong and reliable in rescue work.
Secures rope to a pole or post. Common in tent pitching and pioneering.
Makes a fixed loop at the end of a rope. Extremely useful in rescues.
“On my honour, I promise that I will do my best — To do my duty to God* and my country, To help other people at all times, To obey the Scout Law.”
The promise is the foundation of Scouting. It reminds every Scout to live a life of honesty, service, and dedication. This oath is recited during investiture ceremonies and is the guiding light for a Scout’s journey.
The Scout Salute is made by raising the right hand with three fingers extended, representing the three parts of the Scout Promise: Duty to God and Country, Duty to Others, and Duty to Self. It is used to show respect to the National Flag, during ceremonies, and while greeting senior leaders or fellow Scouts. The salute is a symbol of respect, discipline, and unity across the Scouting movement worldwide.

The Scout Sign is given by raising the right hand to shoulder level with the palm facing forward and three fingers upright. The three fingers also symbolize the three parts of the Scout Promise. It is used during the Scout Promise, while reciting the Scout Law, and as a sign of recognition between Scouts. This gesture reminds Scouts of their values and shared brotherhood across the world.
Learn More →Scouts and Guides greet each other with the left-hand handshake, a unique tradition in the movement. The left hand, being closer to the heart, symbolizes trust, courage, and brotherhood. It originated from an African warrior custom that was adopted by Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting. This handshake reminds Scouts that bravery and loyalty are the foundation of true friendship.

The Bharat Scouts & Guides flag is blue in color, symbolizing the sky and the ocean, representing universal brotherhood. At the center, the Fleur-de-lis (Scouts) and the Trefoil (Guides) are placed together, showing unity of both movements. The Ashoka Chakra stands as a reminder of India’s heritage, truth, and justice. The flag is hoisted during parades, camps, and national events, instilling pride and discipline in every Scout and Guide.
